“What’s with the name? Bit of a bummer”,  I suggest.

“I suppose it is. But it’s truthful.” Carol Heck stares at a spot on the floor in front of her. “It’s tragic in fact. My mother, who started this business, never got over the fact that my father, a man I never knew, left her quite suddenly. You know the stories of the guy who is going out for a loaf of bread and never comes back? Well that is literally what happened. My mother claims they had a love that could not die and that his having gone missing meant that forces beyond his control took him away.”
“What’s your take?’ I ask. 

“In honor of my mother I choose to believe he left because he had no choice. That thought kept my mother alive for years. For over thirty years whenever she set a table there was always a place setting for my father. How could I argue with a faith that well founded in certitude? How could anyone?”
